An original creation by Sthan KABAR-LOUET for the New Caledonia Contemporary Dance Company, commissioned by the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac as part of the exhibition Kanak: Art is a Word.
In dialogue with the landmark exhibition presented at the Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, choreographer Sthan KABAR-LOUET created a new ballet entitled Figure In!, first presented at the Centre Culturel Tjibaou in September 2013 before being performed at the museum in Paris.
Conceived as an initiatory journey for seven dancers, Figure In! creates a genuine encounter between Oceanian cultures—particularly traditional Kanak movement vocabulary—and contemporary dance. The work explores contrasts, intersections, and the eclecticism of forms, both choreographic and musical, offering a powerful dialogue between heritage and modernity.
The New Caledonia Contemporary Dance Company is supported by the Government of New Caledonia, Province Sud, the Cultural Affairs Mission (French State), the Conservatory of Music and Dance of New Caledonia, the City of Nouméa, the City and Cultural Centre of Mont-Dore, and the New Caledonia House in Paris.
Additional support was provided by valued sponsors including the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, KNS Koniambo Nickel, OPT New Caledonia, Les Casinos de Nouméa, Radio Rythme Bleu, Aircalin, and Air France Cargo.
As a patron of the exhibition Kanak: Art is a Word through its support for the restoration of twelve Kanak masks, the BNP Paribas Foundation also contributed to the production of this work created by New Caledonian choreographer Sthan KABAR-LOUET.
